Arsenal have activated option to extend William Saliba contract until June 2024. Existing terms were due to end June 2023 & deadline to trigger extra 12 months was Dec 31. Arsenal did so in recent days. Talks continue over fresh deal @TheAthleticFC #AFC

Asked Arteta about Saliba's future:

We have a few of those that we are willing to extend the contract. Willy is one of them. We are trying to do that because we know he can be a really important part of our plans.

Also asked about how talks are progressing with Saliba:

"I hope so. That’s more to Edu and the board to be discussing with him. What I know is that the player is really happy, the player wants to be here and that’s the main thing."

Arteta on Tomiyasu:
Yeah he’s getting closer and closer. He’s training with us so he’s available.

Arteta on Pele:
He’s someone who probably changed the dimension of world football because he could do a bit of everything. It’s a big loss.

Arteta on Smith Rowe:
Very much. He’s made big steps in the last week. He took part in some training sessions and looked good. We’re hoping to have him back soon.

Arsenal have been told that Shakhtar are using the Antony to Man United deal as a bar to value Mudryk (£85m+).
