It’s a big result, a massive result, to come to Old Trafford when you feel they’re building something, a special momentum with new signings, and they want to kick on this season. In a way, it’s a very tough place, and to come away with the win—I’m very happy and proud of the team.

Does that show resilience and focus, returning to those basics?

MA:
Yes, because we showed it in a different way today. I think we did two things very well: one, to deal with set pieces, and then react, especially, to mistakes—some of them unnecessary, some of them unusual. But the way every single player reacted to those moments gave us the opportunity to win the game. If not, it’s impossible. And that’s about how we compete and how much we want it, as you said.

A long time ago you said you needed to show different things. How important is it to be able to show that over a season and get away with a victory when you’re not playing your best football?

MA:
Well, that gives you momentum and confidence—two very important things—because when you know that in some aspects your standards aren’t where they should be, which today we weren’t in certain areas, you can still find a way to win the game. The team has to find that resilience throughout a 10-month season, in different contexts, to be able to do that. Of course we have to improve a lot of things, and that will happen very soon, but in terms of managing to get a very positive result, that’s a great way to do it.


There were moments in attack where the final pass wasn’t made and I could see you on the touchline being frustrated. What needs to change in those moments so the right decision is made and those attacks turn into big chances?


MA:
Well, when you see—there were seven or eight situations where the ball is completely open to play through, we’re on, we’re away, attacking the keeper, and we give that ball away. Then it becomes a basketball game, and a basketball game against a team that is extremely, extremely good at finishing actions with quality—that’s a very difficult thing to deal with. That’s why I talk about the reaction to that, because if you don’t react to those mistakes quickly enough, sharply enough, you get a big problem.


Can we get your assessment of Viktor Gyokeres, making his Premier League debut today?

MA
He did a lot of things very well. You can tell, especially in our high press—arriving with the intensity that we demand. Especially in the first half, we were giving them a bit too much time; that’s something we have to work on with him, especially there. And then in the finalizing situations, he didn’t have that many chances because, as I said, in the previous actions before we had to play that last ball, their line was standing high with 40 meters behind. We needed to put the pass through to exploit his quality. But overall, coming away in your first game away at Manchester United with Arsenal with a win is a good start.


Calafiori came on—he couldn’t speak much post-match—but is that the way to go with him? What does he give you that maybe some other players don’t? It looked easy for him today.

He has the capacity to change the energy—he comes into the room and changes the energy; he changes the energy in the team. He has an aura, a presence that is special. And he’s a player who is very unpredictable for the opponent because he can occupy very different spaces and do things around your box, in the middle, and in the opposition box that are very difficult to predict. So I’m very happy with him.


There was a time when the club’s record away against the top six wasn’t great, and we talked about it being maybe a mental block. Do you think that changed now?

MA
I think that was the case. There were 18 or 22 years here at Old Trafford without winning before I came, and now we’re going in a direction where we’ve won here the first game [of the season], and we’re still not fully happy. It’s a good sign.
