Do you have sympathy with Liverpool given that a few have gone against you?


For sure, you know at the end you want to get what you deserve. You want to minimise errors that you cannot control away from the work and the job that you do on a daily basis. Everybody is trying to have a really clean and honest game but in the end you have to earn the right to win it and play in the conditions that the rules allow. When that doesn’t happen it’s extremely frustrating.

What have you made of Lens?

Well I’ve been really impressed. What they did last year is incredible to be within a point of the title. The way they did it, the form they had at home. This season they’ve been really unlucky with some of the results they’ve had. At home, they’ve got just one point and I don’t know how. So we expect a huge battle tomorrow. We’re more than aware of it. We showed the players everything and we have a huge test tomorrow.

How important has Saliba become over the past year or so?

When you look at how he’s developing, the role that he’s got in the team, the level and the consistency especially that he’s shown in the last year or so, I think it’s remarkable. I think you won’t find many centre backs his age doing what he’s doing. Credit to the players around him as well, the way they are guiding him, protecting him and inspiring him. And then obviously the qualities that he has, he has that presence, physicality and that composure to be a leader in the back line for a big club like us, so huge compliment to him.

What are your thoughts on VAR after what happened this weekend?

We had some big discussions before the start of the season and everyone had the right intentions to improve the game and find the best way to take it forward. But it’s true that with everything that already happened this season, not just in the PL but in other countries as well, the pressure is increasing. It’s not easy for them. It’s not easy for any club or any manager because that really affects part of the season or a result and that is a dangerous thing to do.

Do you think refs need to have better training in how to enforce VAR?

Well I don’t know. When they explain all the processes of what they’re trying to do it sounds really logical, but in the heat but when you’re talking about millimetres and interpretation of other things like the frames of the camera it’s very, very different. It’s a shame that it’s happening but at the moment we haven’t got the right answers I think.

How's Saka?
He’s fine. He’s much better. It was a big knock but he has recovered well and trained with us today.

Do you pick team with one eye on City?

First of all we have to know who is available and what is the condition of every player because had some issues last week. It’s great that he is available and we will make that call tomorrow.

Does he need to play some time tomorrow to be involved v City?I don’t know. I think his progression in the last week has been very good. He might have some exposure tomorrow depending on how the game goes.

How big miss for you?

He’s a big player and we know what he brings to the team. He knows exactly what we need and with the injuries we had to other players in midfield and at the back he complements us in a great way and gives us options. So it’s great to have him back again.

How's Partey?

He’s progressed really well in the last two weeks and he managed to train in the last two or three days with the team and that’s great news for us obviously.

Mikel Arteta confirmed to me post-match that the decision to give Havertz the penalty was not pre-planned and that the players took it upon themselves based on the ‘questions around him externally’.
