David Ornstein on Arsenal’s pursuit and capture of Declan Rice:

This time it really was all or nothing for Arsenal. There was no plan B, no capacity for frugal switches to alternative targets and, therefore, no room for error.

It was Declan Rice or bust.

The West Ham captain was everything to Mikel Arteta this summer. Those inside the club had repeated for months that it could not be overstated how central he was to the managers vision.

Without him, Arteta’s plan to take his Arsenal team to the next level simply did not add up. Every other transfer target was inextricably linked to Rice as the centrepiece, the nucleus that would make everything else make sense.

The signing of Declan Rice is obviously different, in terms of the size of the fee, but for Arsenal it represents a continuation of the same transfer policy: young, dynamic, hungry.

He's also another Premier League player: 11 of the 25 signings under Arteta have been PL-proven.

Havertz has been earmarked to replace Granit Xhaka in the left No 8 role but the entire tactical remodelling of the midfield had been predicated on the German playing alongside Rice.

It’s beautiful, it’s an amazing training ground. You see it in photos, and see people talk about it, you walk around and see the history on the wall with Arsenal. It just makes you hungry to push, to demand more of yourself.

What I like about the place is you can feel already that you can’t be comfortable here, you have to push yourself to the max. Speaking to the sports science guys and the physios and the demands they have as well, it’s all about winning and all about mentality, which is what I love.

Balogun’s contract situation is forcing Arsenal’s hand a little bit. Because at the moment, from what we understand, he’s not overly keen on signing a new deal. He’s only got two years left on his contract. He’s coming off an incredible season in France, his value is sky high because of that. And if Arsenal don’t do something this summer, he’s suddenly down to the last year next summer.

“We’ve got no indication that he’s going to sign a new deal and with his determination, because he’s a very ambitious guy, to want regular first-team minutes this season, that kind of forces Arsenal’s hands and sometimes, reluctantly, you have to sell."
